EUGEO is the Society of scholarly Geographical Societies, Associations of Geographers and other membership organisations representing geographers and geographical sciences in Europe, with members from 21 countries.
EUGEO activities
EUGEO exists to stimulate progress and dissemination of geographical science in Europe.
EUGEO acts as a forum and support organisation for member societies and the discipline of geography across Europe. EUGEO’s publishing programme includes the production of texts on the geography of Europe, and volumes of papers (e.g. the Special Edition of Belgeo for the 30th IGC) on the position of geography in the various nations of Europe.
EUGEO holds occasional sessions and its members participate in national and international meetings, including IGU Congresses in Glasgow, Tunis and Tel Aviv.
Advocacy for geography across Europe is a key activity of EUGEO, and has recently fought to strengthen the position of geography teaching in Italy through its network of member societies.
A flagship activity of EUGEO in recent times has been its biennial congresses, the first of which was held in 2007. Organised by the Royal Dutch Geographical Society in association with EUGEO, and hosted at the University of Amsterdam, the congress brought together geographers from all over Europe to discuss geographical research relevant to (in particular the European dimension of) policy. EUGEO 2009 held in Bratislava built on the success of the inaugural congress and was organised by the Slovak Geographical Society in close coorporation with the Hungarian and Czech Societies. EUGEO 2011 was held at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) in London around the theme of Geography's stake in Europe: People, environment, politics.
The next EUGEO Congress will be held in Rome in 2013. Please register your interest at www.eugeo2013.com to receive updates via email.
